Catalyst 2960 as a L3 switch

Introduction

  • generally switches from 2960 series are layer 2 however in newer IOS like 12.2(55) there is possibility to change them to layer 3 switches.

  • we can afford to implementing routing on these switches onyl in small or medium size networks where there is no huge network traffic

  • the biggest network I implemented this solution is factory on south of Europe with central application and local file servers ~ 130 users

  • 1.Change IOS

#copy tftp://1.1.1.1/c2960-lanbasek9-mz.122-55.SE.bin flash:c2960-lanbasek9-mz.122-55.SE.bin

Upload new IOS onto flash,in that case 12.2(55).

#show boot system

Check system boot settings

show_boot.jpg

(config)#boot system flash:c2960-lanbasek9-mz.122.55.SE.bin

  • Set new IOS as a start one.

#show boot

BOOT path-list :flash:c2960-lanbasek9-mz.122.55.SE.bin

Check if your settings are correct.

#wr

save config

#reload

reload switch

  • 2.Change work mode(template) of your switch

#show sdm prefer

check current work mode (template)

sdm_prefer1.jpg

(config)#sdm prefer lanbase-routing

change template from "default" to "lanbase-routing"

 sdm_prefer2.jpg

#wr

save config

#reload

reload switch

#show sdm prefer

check template settings after reload.

sdm_prefer3.jpg

  • 3.Enable routing

(config)#ip routing

enable routing(by default disabled).

from now we can use our c2960 switch as a layer three switch like c3750 or c3560.
